Comprehensive Diabetes Care

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease in which beta cells do not function and insulin is not produced by the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. There is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is directed at managing the amount of sugar in the blood using insulin. Symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst, unintentional weight loss, and irritability. There are many new advancements in continuous blood sugar monitors and continuous insulin pumps. Speak with your Modern Endocrine provider about options at your next visit (and see below for more details)!

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease in which your body’s ability to regulate and use glucose is impaired. In contrast to type 1 diabetes, your body does produce insulin, but is no longer able to use it efficiently. Obesity and untreated insulin resistance are common causes associated with type 2 diabetes. A variety of oral and injectable medications are available for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Along with medications, lifestyle modifications with diet, exercise, and proper supplementation can be beneficial in managing this disease. Symptoms include blurry vision, increased thirst or urination, frequent infections, unintentional weight loss, and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. There are many new advancements in continuous blood sugar monitors and continuous insulin pumps. Speak with your Modern Endocrine provider about options at your next visit (and see below for more details)!

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adult (LADA):

LADA, also known as type 1.5 diabetes or autoimmune diabetes, is a slow progressing form of type 1 diabetes usually diagnosed in adulthood. Similar to type 1 diabetes, LADA occurs because your pancreas stops producing adequate insulin. Treatment options can vary depending on time of diagnosis.

Continuous Glucose Monitors/Insulin Pumps

Our providers and staff have extensive knowledge and training on the most up to date technology for the treatment of diabetes. CGMs are personal systems affording both real-time observation of continuous data by patients and retrospective review of complete profiles by providers in clinic. These include Dexcom, Libre, and Eversense, a new form of CGM that is implantable and lasts up to 6 months. Insulin pumps are small devices that deliver insulin in a steady and continuous dose (basal rate) and as a surge (bolus) at your direction around mealtime. These include the Tandem, Medtronic, and Omnipod. Some of these devices now sync and work in a hybrid closed loop system together like a pancreas autonomously delivering inulin when blood glucose levels are high and stopping the delivery of insulin when blood glucose levels are low.

Yearly screening

We not only make sure your basic diabetes screening labs are up to date yearly (kidney function, liver enzymes, lipids, thyroid, and eye exams), but we also offer yearly cardiac screening to ensure our patients with diabetes are not at increased risk of the number 1 killer of diabetic patients, which is cardiovascular disease.
